HIGH POWERED: Groups and Filters, power user style

- This article Applies to the Apple iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch only -

For this article, please make sure you have update to the latest version of Pocket Tunes Radio from iTunes.

Pocket Tunes has two powerful feature that together make a very high powered way to manage your favorites stations.

First is creating your own groups. Pocket Tunes allows you to create your own groups and add stations to that group. But it still retains the other group(s) that station was in so you can always find the station(s) there as well.

Second, Pocket Tunes gives you an easy way to filter based on Group names.

Together they give you a great way to manage your favorites stations.

Here is a typical way to use these features together.

  1. Add your own group. Tap the "Edit" button on the Groups screen of Pocket Tunes. Then tap the "+" sign to add a new group. If you add a character like an "@" sign to the front of the group name, you can force the group to be sorted to the top of the list of your groups.

In the image above we have already added a Group we called "@@My Group". We then add another group called "@@My News Stations". You can call the groups anything you want.

  2. Once you have your group(s) set up, find a station you want to add to the group, don't tap on it. Instead tap "Edit" in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. Now tap the station, you are now on the Edit Station screen
  4. Scroll down to where you see "Add Group"

  5. Tap "Add Group" and now select the group you created that you want that station to appear in. You can also tap "Add Group" again and tap Favorites to add the station to your Favorites as well.

  6. Now tap "Save" and then "Done"

This image show a station that was added using this method.
  7. Repeat this for all the stations you want to add to the Group(s) you created.

Once you have added all the station you want in each Group (at least for now) it's time to sue the power of that set up.

  1. One way to do that is to simply use your personal groups as locations for your most used stations. But another method is to use the groups you created as filters in your Favorites.
  2. For this to work, we assume that you added the Favorites group to each of the stations you want to filter.
  3. Go to your Favorites and tap Filter

  4. You see all the categories that all the station in your favorites are attached to, including the Groups you created. Here you see the advantage of having the "@" at the start of the name, your groups are on the top

  5. Now tap one of your groups. Notice how Pocket Tunes has eliminated any station that is not in that group.

  6. Tap "Done" to close the filter and you now you have just the stations that are in Favorites and in the group you created.

  7. To clear the Filter, tap "Clear" in the upper right.

Did you Know? You can actually hide your groups. If you want, you can create your own groups just to use in Favorites. Simply create the group as we said above, but set it to be hidden. The group will still show up in filters but it will not clutter up your Groups screen.

This YouTube video shows you how to hide/unhide groups.
