An alternate way to create, edit, manage playlists, including iTunes playlists

For Palm OS Only:

Applies to:Pocket Tunes 3.x.x and up
Deluxe, Basic, Trial, Bundle
Devices:All supported devices
Computer Operating System:Windows XP or Vista

Pocket Tunes has a built in way to manage playlists but it is not the only way. You can create playlists in Windows Media Player and drag and drop them (with Windows Media Player 11 only) to your Palm and the list gets transferred along with the songs.

But are there any other options? In short yes! In fact the following method can be used to create playlists of songs already on your device, or as another way to transfer your iTunes lists.

Here are the basics:

First, what you'll need:

  1. a card reader or a program like Card Export that turns your Palm into a card reader
  2. music on your palm (for iTunes, see section specific to it below)
  3. Playlist Creator 3 (see below for specific settings in Playlist Creator)

To create a playlist of tracks already on your  card:

  1. Insert your card into the card reader or activate Card Export
  2. Open a window on your PC for your card and navigate to where your audio files are on your card (usually in the /Audio folder)
  3. Launch Playlist Creator
  4. In Playlist Creator you need to set two things. One, where the playlist should be saved on the card. And two, the name and playlist type.
    1. Click the file folder to the left of the "Save Location" box, then navigate to the SD card, and choose the PALMProgramsPocketTunes folder (alternatively you can use the PalmLauncher folder).
    2. Once you have selected the folder to save the playlist, enter whatever name you want in the "Name and Type" box. Set the drop down beside that box to '.pls' or '.m3u' either is fine.
  5. Now all you need to do is drag the tracks you want in the list from the SD card window to Playlist Creator. Set them in the order you want.
  6. Once you have all the tracks you want in the list, save it by pressing the "Create Playlist" button.
  7. That's it, now all you have to do is put the card back into your device, open Pocket Tunes, go to the Playlists (enter 'L' to jump there quickly) and select your new list. Pocket Tunes will start playing

To transfer iTunes playlists and tracks:

  1. Open iTunes
  2. Insert your card into the card reader (or activate card Export) and open a window for the card on your PC
  3. Open Playlist Creator 3 (see special setting for iTunes tracks in the Playlist Creator setup information below)
  4. In iTunes, click on a playlist you wish to transfer
  5. Select all the tracks in that playlist and drag and drop them to Playlist Creator 3
  6. Press 'Create Playlist'
  7. Now bring the window for the SD card to the foreground and navigate to the /Audio folder
  8. from iTunes, drag and drop the same tracks you dragged to Playlist Creator, to the /Audio folder, the tracks MUST be in that folder for Pocket Tunes to 'see' them.
  9. the tracks will transfer over and once done, insert the card back into your device and open the playlist in Pocket Tunes and the tracks will play in the order they were in in iTunes.
    2. Once you have selected the folder to save the playlist, enter the name of the iTunes playlist in the "Name and Type" box. Set the drop down beside that box to '.pls' or '.m3u' either is fine.

Note that this only applies to unprotected iTunes tracks, Pocket Tunes does not support protected tracks from iTunes, only an iPod device can play those tracks. For more information on what iTunes formats Pocket Tunes supports, see this Knowledge Base article.

Playlist Creator 3 settings:

Here are some settings that we suggest when using playlist Creator 3 with Pocket Tunes 4, Pocket Tunes 5 users please see this Knowledge Base article.

  • In Playlist Creator, click on 'Settings'.
    • In 'Playlist details' set the "Saving playlist entries' drop down to "Relative"
    • In 'File types' make sure you have added 'aac',  'm4a', 'mp4', 'ogg', 'wma' and 'wav' (mp3 should be there already) so that you can use all those file types with Playlist Creator (note some of the formats mentioned are only supported in Pocket Tunes Deluxe)
  • Another nice thing about Playlist Creator 3.5 is that you can edit playlsits already on your SD card. Just click 'Open' in Playlist Creator and then navigate to PALMProgramsPocketTunes (or wherever you saved your list(s)) and select the list you wish to edit. After you edit it, press Create Playlist to re-save it.
