This applies only to Pocket Tunes 4 or earlier on the Palm operating system.
Pocket Tunes 4 and up on Windows Mobile and Pocket Tunes 5 and up on Palm include Pocket Tunes Sync which allows you to easily sync your iTunes playlists to your device.
NOTE: Songs on your playlist must be in MP3, iTunes PLUS or Unprotected AAC format. Pocket Tunes does not currently support playback of iTunes copy protected tracks.
What you need:
- Windows Media Player (best to use Windows Media Player 10 or 11)
- Pocket Tunes
- iTunes playlist converter available from here. (note use Internet Explorer to go to this link as it did not work with Firefox when we tested it)
You should be familiar with transferring tracks from Windows Media Player to your Palm using Pocket Tunes before you proceed. For more information about it, please see this Knowledge Base article, http://www.normsoft.com/kb/idx/0/140/article/
UPDATE: We now have another method that you can use. You need a card reader or Card Export (which turns your device into a card reader) to use this method but it is very easy to do, see this Knowledge Base article for more information.
For the following, it's best to use Legacy mode. But you cannot use Legacy with Windows Media Player 11 so there is an advanced section at the end of this article if you want to use MTP mode with this process (which is what Windows Media Player 11 uses). To change Pocket Tunes to Legacy mode. Open the Pocket Tunes menu, go to 'Preferences' and choose 'Copy from PC preferences', select the drop down and change it to 'Legacy', then close Pocket Tunes and reopen it. .
Using the Playlist Generator program mentioned above, convert your playlist(s) for iTunes.
In Windows Media Player:
- Go to the menu, select 'File'
- Then select 'Add to Library'
- Then 'Add File or Playlist'
- Select the M3U file you converted from iTunes, press open
- Connect your Palm to the USB cable and open Pocket Tunes
- Click on the Library tab near the top of Windows Media Player and scroll down to the 'My Playlists' on the left hand side of the screen
- Find the playlist you just imported
- Right click on it and select 'Add to sync list'
- Go to the Sync screen in Windows Media Player and press 'Start Sync'
- Once your songs are transferred, close Windows Media Player and exit Pocket Tunes.
To transfer the playlist:
- Open Palm Quick Install
- Drag and drop the M3U playlist into the 'Expansion Card' window
- Hot sync your device and the list will be transferred to Pocket Tunes
To play the list:
- Open Pocket Tunes
- Open the menu
- Go to Actions
- Select 'Manage Playlists
- Select the playlist you transferred over and the racks should play
ADVANCED:
You can use Pocket Tunes in MTP mode. It offers some extra features but you need to make one change before you transfer ANY of the tracks that are on the playlist.
- Make sure Pocket Tunes is in MTP mode, open the Pocket Tunes menu, go to 'Preferences' and choose 'Copy from PC preferences', confirm that it says MTP in the drop down menu. If it says anything else, select the drop down and change it to MTP, then close Pocket Tunes and reopen it.
- Connect your device to Windows Media Player as you normally do
- Go to the 'Tools' menu in Windows Media Player, then select 'Options'
- Click the 'Devices' tab
- Select the Palm device and click 'Properties'
- UNCHECK the box beside 'Create folder hierarchy on device
- Click 'Apply' and then press 'OK' twice.
Now follow the steps to transfer the tracks as detailed above for Legacy mode.
SUPER ADVANCED:
You can have the list transferred via Windows Media Player if you would like but you have to set up the list to 'Auto Sync' with your Palm. Do the following after you have imported the playlist but before you have transferred the tracks.
To do this:
- Connect your device to Windows Media Player as you normally do (with Pocket Tunes in MTP mode)
- Go to the Sync tab and click 'Setup Sync' or 'Sync Settings' (in the upper left area of the screen, it will be one or the other)
- Check the box beside 'Synchronize device automatically'
- Then select any playlists you want to be automatically synced to your device by checking the box beside them in the lower window.
- Press 'OK'
- After a few seconds, Windows Media Player will start transferring the list and tracks to our device.
- Once it's done, simply disconnect from the USB and go to your playlist (Actions -> Manage Playlists) and the playlist will be there.
