Pocket Tunes and iTunes Plus tracks

For Palm OS only:

Applies to:Pocket Tunes 4.x.x
Deluxe (or valild Trial version)
Devices:All supported devices
Computer Operating SystemNot Applicable
By now many of you probably know that iTunes is selling music from EMI without copy protection. What you may not be aware of is that Pocket Tunes Deluxe can play these tracks AND they come with album art as well.

So how do you get the tracks from iTunes to your Palm so that Pocket Tunes plays them? Well, you have a couple of options which we'll explain below.

First make sure you are purchasing iTunes Plus tracks. These are the unprotected tracks. Itunes lists them slightly differently, calling them 'iTunes Plus' to differentiate them from the other, protected, iTunes tracks. On average they are priced between $.99-1.39/track. Also, you have to be using Pocket Tunes 4 Deluxe or a valid trial version of Pocket Tunes 4.

To transfer the tracks:

Best Method - Use a card reader with iTunes.

Many PCs come with a Card Reader now for your SD cards, but if yours does not you can usually get one for under $20US. Some SD cards come with one for free.

To transfer audio files via a card reader, just open iTunes and put your card in the card reader. Open Windows Explorer as well and browse to your SD card in that window. Locate the files you wish to transfer from iTunes. Select them and drag them to the Windows Explorer window to copy them to your SD card. We recommend dropping them into the /Audio folder of the card. And that's it. When you put the card back in your Palm, Pocket Tunes will see the tracks and display the album art when you play them.

Good Method - Use a card reader and drag and drop the files.

You do not have to use iTunes, you can go right to where the files are located and drag and drop the files or whole folders to the SD card.

Locate the tracks on your PC. By default, iTunes places them in the My MusiciTunesiTunes Music*Artist Name**Album Title* folder. So for example, the Beach Boys song 'All Summer Long' which is an iTunes Plus track, can be found in My MusiciTunesiTunes MusicThe Beach BoysThe Warmth of the Sun .

Now follow the directions in this Knowledge Base article to transfer tracks using a card reader,

Slow but workable method - HotSync.

Finally, you can hot sync the files over but it takes a while so is not the best method. Hot syncing audio files is by far the slowest method to transfer, but it does not require a card reader. If you want to do it, just drag the files you want to transfer to the "Expansion Card" window of Palm Quick Install and hot sync. They will be transferred over and Pocket Tunes will be able to display and play them.

Some notes: The above directions are Windows based. You should be able to follow a similar procedure on the Macintosh, but the files will be in different locations. There is a great alternative to a card reader that you can use called card Export II from
www.softick.com. This software turns your Palm into a card reader. Using Card Export II, you can follow all the steps above as if you had a card reader.
