How do I use Windows Media Player 10 or 11 to transfer files from my PC?

For Palm OS Only:

Applies to:Pocket Tunes 3.x.x or 4.x.x
Deluxe, Basic, Trial, Bundle
Devices:All supported devices
Computer Operating System:Windows XP or Vista

Before proceeding, make sure that Pocket Tunes is in MTP mode and you are using Windows Media Player 10 or 11. If you are using the built in version of Pocket Tunes then you need to update to the latest version to be able to use MTP mode. You can download the latest version of Pocket Tunes here . It is a free update if your device came with Pocket Tunes built in (LifeDrive, T|X, 700p, 680, 755p).

If your system does not support MTP communication, please see this Knowledge Base article http://www.normsoft.com/kb/idx/0/155/article/

Steps to transfer files from Windows Media Player:

1. Hook up the Palm device to a USB connection, WITHOUT Pocket Tunes open on the device.(Note: It is recommended that you connect your USB cable to one of the main USB sockets in the back of the computer rather than a USB Hub, some hubs can interfere with the transfer of copy protected material)

2. Now open Pocket Tunes

3. You should get a pop up asking you what you would like Windows to do. Choose Windows Media Player

4. Windows Media Player will start up if not already open, then initialize your device.

5. On your Palm you should see a white and green screen that says "Communicating with PC...Please Wait", this screen will be on Pocket Tunes as long as you are hooked up to Windows Media Player

6. Once Windows Media Player has initialized the device you should see it listed on the right pane of  Windows Media Player 11 (Press the 'Next device' link in the upper right if your device is not shown). On Windows Media Player 10, your device will be in the right pane of the 'Sync' window.

7. Now go to the library tab and find the songs you wish to transfer to your device. Right click on each title and select "Add to Sync List"

8. Once you have chosen all your songs, go back to the Sync tab and press "Start Sync"

9. Windows Media Player will begin transfer and tell you what percentage is transferred, make sure you wait until it says complete!

Note: If Windows Media Player says something like 'Windows Media Player cannot convert the file to an audio format that is supported by the device', please see this Knowledge Base article. Windows Media Player 9, 10 & 11 have a default setting where it will try to convert some MP3 files to WMA format during transfer. If you do not have Pocket Tunes Deluxe, this can be a problem. The Knowledge Base article goes through what you can do in this case.

10. Once you have transferred all the songs you wish to transfer, you can press "cancel Communication" on your Palm and your music will now be ready to play.

If at any point in the above steps you do not see the same behaviour as described, let us know by contacting support here http://www.pocket-tunes.com/scripts/support.php
