NormSoft, Inc. Knowledge Base .: Pocket Tunes .: Installing Pocket Tunes .: Troubleshoot .: The installer fails with an error message. What is causing this?

The installer fails with an error message. What is causing this?

There are a few reasons why the installer might fail. If you have a program that interferes with Pocket Tunes installer, it should pop up a message telling you which program(s) and your options. But if it doesn't, here are a couple of things to check.

  • Be sure that no media players are running. Note that occasionally Windows Media Player continues to run even after you close it, so you may need to reboot the computer to completely unload it from memory. Napster puts itself in the system tray in the lower right corner. You need to right click on the Napster icon and select 'Quit Napster' to stop it.
  • If you are installing from the zip file, be sure you extract (unzip) the files to a folder before you run the enclosed installer or it will fail.

If the installation fails while Windows is installing the driver,

  • Make sure you are using Windows Media Player 10 or 11.
  • If you are using Windows Media Player 9, make sure that you are using Legacy mode. Instructions on putting Pocket Tunes into Legacy mode are available here.

If it still fails, write down the error that it says and contact us in support at support@normsoft.com. Please also include the following file:

For Windows XP users: 'setupapi.log' found in the 'c:\windows' directory (if you have extensions hidden this may look like "C:\windows\setupapi" in a folder display).

For Windows Vista users: 'setupapi.dev' found in the 'c:\windows\inf' directory
