If you have an Internet-capable Palm, such as the Treo 600, 650, 680, 700p, 755p with a data plan from your wireless provider, or if you have access to a WiFi or Bluetooth connection and have a LifeDrive, T|X, Tungsten E2 or other devices that has wireless capabilities, Pocket Tunes can stream Internet Audio from locations ShoutCast, Live365 and RadioIO among others! You can listen to hundreds of stations streamed live over the Internet, or you can create your own station to broadcast your favorite tunes (Additional software required - see www.shoutcast.com for details).
Important Note: You may be charged for wireless data usage by your Internet provider. Please check your data plan before tuning into a ShoutCast station. NormSoft is not responsible for any charges incurred due to using this software.
Below is a basic start up for streaming Internet Audio. There is also information in our online User Guide here http://www.pocket-tunes.com/pockettunes/docs/readme.html and if you want to listen to Live365 stations, our Knowledge Base has information here http://www.normsoft.com/kb/idx/0/124/article/
You must have an Internet connection to stream Internet audio. Through a data line from your service provider if you are using a Palm phone (voice line will not work for this). For other devices you need to have a connection to the Internet via WiFi or Bluetooth.
Pocket Tunes 4 Customers:
If you are using Pocket Tunes 4 it is very easy to get started. Simply go to Pocket Tunes, open the Tools menu and select "Internet Radio". The first time you open that area, Pocket Tunes will load the most up to date list of stations. Simply select a station form the list or click the drop down and select a different group of stations and select one form there and then press Play. Pocket Tunes will load that station plus all the stations from that group in case you want to switch from the station you chose.
You can also use your browser on your Palm and navigate to a station you want to play. As long as it is in a format that Pocket Tunes plays (currently MP3, AAC, Ogg streams) click the URL for the stream and Pocket Tunes will load the station in a few seconds. Note that Pocket Tunes also saves the station address in the Unfiled category so you do not need to use the browser once the station has been played by Pocket Tunes once.
To manually enter a URL for a station. Go to the Internet Radio screen and select the radio group you want to add the stations to. Then go to the menu and select 'Add'. Give the station any name you want. then enter the URL on the lines below 'Station URL:" Press 'OK' and then select the station from the group to play it.
Pocket Tunes 3 Customers:
The easiest way to get started is to go to your browser on your Palm device. Go to our mobile site, http://www.pocket-tunes.com/mobile/index.html . Scroll down to 'Pocket Tunes Media Lounge' and click on it, then go to the 'radioio2go' link. Choose MP3, 32Kbps for now. You may be able to use 64Kbps, which is better sound quality, but that depends on your data speed. For now let's get things going with the 32Kbps and you can experiment after. Select a radio station by tapping it.
Then after a few seconds the download screen will pop up
Make sure 'pTunes' (on some devices it might say 'Device') is highlighted in the box beside 'Save To:'
Then press 'Yes'
On the next screen press 'Save' or 'Save and Open', either is fine
After a few seconds you should hear your station play.
If you have checked the preference "Show console when launched from other applications" in the Background Preferences of Pocket Tunes, the mini console will pop up when you press 'Save'. You can then adjust the volume or open Pocket Tunes if you wish. Dismiss it by pressing 'Okay'.
Note that once you have listened to a station, Pocket Tunes will remember it and store it in the Internet Audio list so you can easily go back to it. To access this list, in Pocket Tunes go to the menu, then choose 'Actions', then choose 'Open'. This takes you to the choose songs screen. In the upper right corner is a drop down menu. Click the drop down menu and select Internet Audio. You will then see a list of any stations you tuned into. You can then select any one of them and Pocket Tunes will tune into it without you needing to go to the browser.
Advanced: You can also tune into a station from the "Choose Songs" screen. In the upper-right, select "Internet Audio" from the popup trigger. You will see a list of all the stations you have listened to in the past. You can add a new station manually by tapping on "New". Pocket Tunes will ask you for the URL. You can enter either a direct path to the stream, or you can enter a path to a PLS file that describes the stream. You can also enter the URL for a static (non-streaming) MP3 or Ogg Vorbis file.
General information:
For ShoutCast stations:
Go to Shoutcast.com and find a station you are interested in. We recommend you start with a station that has a slower stream at first. You can tell the speed of a station by the Bitrate number on the right hand side. Choose something around 24 or 32 to begin with. You can experiment later with faster speeds to see how fast you can stream with the signal your service provider supplies.
Once you decide on a station, tap the 'Tune In' button.
Then after a few seconds the download screen will pop up
Make sure pTunes is highlighted in the box beside 'Save To:'
Then press 'Yes'
On the next screen press 'Save and Open'
After a few seconds you should hear your station play.
Pocket Tunes also supports playing stations from premium services (such as www.di.fm) that require a username and password. To access these stations, use the Choose Songs screen to add an Internet Audio URL.
The URL for the station should look something like this: http://username:password@1.1.1.1:8096
Note that some stations require a high bandwidth connection. Look for the "kbps" setting for the station. If it is 64 kbps or higher, then you may have trouble playing this station using a cell phone or modem.
