What are "Tags" and how do I use them in Pocket Tunes?

Tags (sometimes referred to as ID3 Tags) are bits of information embedded in MP3, WMA, Ogg and many other audio formats, that contain information about the file. It allows information such as the title, artist, album, track number, or other information about the file to be stored in the file itself.

This allows Pocket Tunes to read the Tag information and display it on the main screen as well as sort by Artist, Album, or Genre on the 'Choose Songs' screen (in the Pocket Tunes menu go to Actions and click 'Open' to get to that screen).

To make sure that Pocket Tunes reads the tags:

  1. Open Pocket Tunes,
  2. Open the menu, select 'Actions' then 'Open'.
  3. Make sure the drop down on the right hand side is set to 'All'.
  4. You should then see the folders 'All Content', 'Artist', 'Album', 'Genre' and 'Playlist'.
  5. If you do not, click the folder with the '..' beside it until you do.

You can then either click on Album or Artist to navigate to the specific album or artist you are looking for. When you open an album, you should see the tracks in album order. If you press 'Select All' the album will play back in track order. (for more on playing songs in track order, see this Knowledge Base article)

If you go to 'All Content' instead of the specific album, Pocket Tunes shows all your tracks in alphabetical order.

How to edit the Tag information:

Most software programs will include the Tag information automatically when you rip the song from CD and all online stores include Tag information in their files. If some information is missing from your audio file(s) you can use Windows Media Player or freeware programs like ID3TagIt (available here http://www.id3-tagit.de/index.htm) to edit the tag information.

In Windows Media Player, locate the track you wish to edit. Right click on the track and select "Advanced Tag Editor". Once you have edited the tag information you will need to transfer the newly edited track to Pocket Tunes. Delete the track that is already on your device, then transfer the new track and the changes will be seen by Pocket Tunes.
